What is ERC20?

ERC 20 is short for "Ethereum Request for Comments." It is an official protocol used for the purpose of suggesting improvements in the Ethereum Blockchain network. '20' in ERC20 is the unique proposal ID number. Thus, ERC20 defines a set of rules which must be followed in order to be considered and are called 'ERC Tokens.' 

The inception of ERC20 - the standard protocol has helped blockchain and cryptocurrencies get the attention it deserves. Many people misinterpret it as a technology. However, it is not a technology, not a library, not even a piece of code. 

It typically is a specification standard that developers must follow in order to create their tokens on Ethereum blockchain and enable trades on various crypto exchanges. And as a token or ICO follows these standards, it is listed as an ERC20 token. This whole scenario has helped crypto exchanges to provide uniformity and faster trading access; thus helping it reach millions of users.
